Knock Out Cup Q/Final
Bude 3
St.Newlyn East 2
After being
beaten twice in the league by their opposition, Bude produced a solid
display to dump St.Newlyn East out of this quarter final encounter.
St. Newlyn started the stronger but were one nil down after 5 mins
when defender Lee Cornish put a floated through ball over the defence
to Dan Balsdon who lobbed the oncoming keeper. St Newlyn equalised
after 20 mins when Bude failed to clear from defence, the loose ball
was squared to Mike Thompson just inside the box, was allowed to shoot
and found the bottom corner. St.Newlyn nearly took the lead 10 mins
later when a free kick outside the box was towards the top right hand
corner, keeper Matt Warburton got across to save an ‘almost’ perfect
strike. Minutes later Bude took the lead when a short free kick to
Lee Cornish saw him put another great cross in to the box, little
Tommy Statton used his height to get in front his marker and head in
to the top corner. Norman Foster nearly stretched the lead soon after
when put through down the right, running in on goal his strike was
well saved by the visiting keeper. St Newlyn came on strong for the
remaining minutes and equalised right on half time when a cross from
the left picked out Gary Whieldon at the back post who volleyed in
from close range. The second half and against the wind Bude defended
well with some early St.Newlyn pressure, but rarely troubled the
goal. Midway through the half the ball was misjudged by the St.Newlyn
centre half and Statton reacted to run through down the left and with
the outside of his right bent the ball past the keeper into the net.
Bude should have been awarded a penalty when the St.Newlyn keeper
clearly brought down a Bude forward but the ref was the only person
who didn’t see it and waved on play after 75 mins. Bude held out well
to see themselves progress to the semi final.
